Describe the characteristics of performance-driven team

Discussion Post: Servant Leadership in Practice

According to Mayo & Woolley (2016), performance-driven teams in healthcare are collaborative, creating synergy and provide the best patient. Team members are all working towards the common goal, providing the best care and achieving the best outcomes for the patient, but have different expertise so must use communication to influence patient care (Mayo & Woolley, 2016). For example, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists are all part of the patient care team, but will all bring different knowledge and skills to contribute to a common plan of care. With such a diversity of members contributing and influencing care in the performance-driven team, it is also imperative that members have mutual respect, be active listeners, and be open-minded (Mayo & Woolley, 2016).

Intrinsic motivation (IM) is an individual's internal motivation to perform to meet personal or organizational goals because of the personal satisfaction achieved from the job or obtaining those goals (Baljoon et al., 2018). Extrinsic motivation (EM) are external factors, such as bonuses or awards, that are used to influence job performance with positive reinforcement (Baljoon et al., 2018). EM may also come from an individual wishing to avoid a negative consequence, such as termination of employment or demotion.

It is important to understand both types of motivation because they both have influence over individual job performance and that of the team as well. Ideally, individuals will have a strong IM to complete tasks and work towards a common team goal. Baljoon et al. (2018) identified factors, including autonomy, respectful communication, and opportunity for career development in their role as important in influencing job satisfaction, and IM, of nurses. Creating a culture where nurses are valued and respected is beneficial to the team. However, EM also plays a role in job satisfaction for nurses, and factors such as adequate compensation or safe working environments are important to address to maintain IM (Baljoon et al., 2018).
