Basic beam deflection

Q1. Draw a space, shear force and the bending moment diagram for the beams shown below. Point out on the diagrams the location of maximum shear force and bending moment in each case.

a) Cantilevered beam with a point load applied at free end.

b) Cantilevered beam with UDL acting all along the whole length of the beam.

c) Simply supported beam with a point load acting in the centre of beam.

d) Simply supported beam with UDL acting all along the whole length of the beam.

Q2. A simply supported beam is made from the hollow tube 80 mm outer diameter and 40 mm inner diameter. This is simply supported over a span of 6 m. A point load of 900 N is positioned at the middle. Determine the deflection at the middle if E = 200GPa.

Q3. Determine the flexural Stiffness of a simply supported beam that limits the deflection to 1mm at the middle. The span is 2 m and the point load is 200 KN at middle.

Q4. A simply supported beam is 4 m long with UDL of 200N/m. The flexural stiffness is 100 MNm2. Compute the slope at the ends and deflection in the middle.

Q5. A simply supported beam is made from the hollow tube 80 mm outer diameter and 40 mm inner diameter. This is simply supported over a span of 6 m. Density of the material is 7300kg/m3.  E = 200GPa. Compute the deflection at the middle due to the weight of beam.
