Assignment: Rhetorical Analysis

Task:

Option A: Choose ONE music video from the provided list

Option B: Choose TWO music videos to compare and contrast

After completing the assigned readings, you will use the concepts from the readings to complete a rhetorical analysis your selected music video(s). For this assignment, completing a rhetorical analysis gives you the opportunity to share your understanding and explanation of varying elements that appear within the music video. You should be as thorough as possible to convincingly persuade me of your perspective through your analysis.

Once you decide which video(s) you would like to analyze, I suggest watching the video 3 times. The first time - just watch and do nothing else. The second time, watch and take notes of the different elements that stand out to you. The third time, use the following questions to help you begin documenting and analyzing the various elements; you should also feel free to create your own questions to help identify what is most interesting to you.

A Few Questions to Consider:

Rhetor (Musical artist/group):

  • What is the group like?
  • Which visual elements are most striking?
  • What philosophical beliefs do you think the rhetor holds?
  • How does the music video represent those philosophical beliefs?
  • How does the subject/text of the lyrics represent the philosophical beliefs?

Subject:

  • What is the song about?
  • Where does the video take place?
  • What is happening in the video?
  • What are the images that stand out to you?
  • Why are these images important?
  • How do the images relate to the song?
  • How do the images relate to the rhetor?

Audience:

  • Who might be attracted to the song?
  • Who might not be attracted to the song?
  • What is the genre of the song?
  • How do the audiences relate to the genre of the song?
  • What does the video do to attract possible audiences?
