Honor Killing
Our readings take a look at women's victimization. From a global perspective, one of the crimes that would be included in this category is that known as honor killings; when girls are murdered after they've brought "dishonor" or "disgrace" to the family. The act of murder is meant to restore the family's honor.
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? Individually, you will document and respond to these questions below. Then in your groups, discuss your responses.
Be prepared to share with the class your findings.
1. There is a fair amount of disagreement with the application of the term: Honor Killing; many think we should be using some other terminology. Does changing the name of the crime change anything? Why or why not?
2. Is this a conflict of cultural values? Or is this yet another means of oppressing women? Explain your answer.
3. What suggestions do you have for preventing this type of victimization?
4. Any other thoughts or comments on this topic?
