Packet switching is a digital networking communications technique which groups all transmitted data, irrespective of content, kind, or structure, into correctly sized blocks, termed as packets. Packet switching functions delivery of variable bit rate data streams (series of packets) over a shared network. Whenever traversing network adapters, routers, switches, and other network nodes, packets are queued and buffered, resultant in variable delay and throughput based on the traffic load in the network.
