Due to shortcomings in OFB mode Diffie has introduced an additional mode of operation, termed to the counter mode. It varies from OFB mode in the manner that the successive data blocks are produced for subsequent encryptions. Rather than deriving one data block as the encryption of the preceding data block, Diffie introduced encrypting the quantity i + IV (mod 264) for the ith data block, here IV is certain initialization vector.
