Cast iron is the mixture of graphite (carbon) flakes in the matrix of steel (iron with carbon in solution). The graphite, which has the shape of the corn flakes, doesn’t contribute much to strength. If anything, it creates the cast iron somewhat sponge or porous like. The graphite does makes it simple to machine and has a dampening consequence on the cast iron. But, it also generates for a lot of surface area, which allows plenty of air (oxygen) to acquire to the iron and form rust.
