Officially a spy satellite referred to as a reconnaissance satellite is an Earth observation satellite or communications satellite deployed for intelligence or military applications. These are basically space telescopes which are pointed toward the Earth rather than toward the stars. The first generation type took photographs, and then ejected canisters of photographic film, that would descend to earth.
