The level of glucose blood (glycemia) should be kept normal. If it becomes abnormally low there is not enough glucose in order to supply the energetic metabolism of the cells. If it is abnormally and chronically high, it causes severe harm to the peripheral nerves, the retina, the skin, and the kidneys and other imperative organs and it can predispose to cardiovascular diseases (strokes, acute myocardial infarction, thrombosis, and so on). If it is acutely too high medical emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis and the hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state may takes place.
