The combiner refers to the mirror having various unusual properties: The reflective coating is greatly wavelength selective, that is centered upon the wavelength of emission from CRT phosphor and clears to other wavelengths, and coating is also extremely selective in the angle of incidence so that only that light impinging in the very narrow range of the angles will be reflected. Combiners are manufactured photographically by exposing the film of dichromate gelatine to crossed laser beams and then creating the resulting diffraction pattern image. As the gelatine is organic, it should be protected from environment, especially from the high temperatures.
