Plankton, nekton, and benthos refer to the 3 groups into which aquatic living beings are divided.
The plankton is formed by the algae and small animals, which float near the water surface carried by the stream. The nekton comprises of the animals which actively swim and dive in the water, such as turtles, fishes, whales, sharks, and so on. The benthos comprehends the animals ecologically associated to the bottom, involving several benthonic fishes, echinoderms, crustaceans, poriferans, molluscs and the annelids.
