1. Access layer- i.e.  LANs
2. Distribution layer- This is the part of backbone design which connects the LANs together
3. Core layer-This connects the different backbone networks together.

The most effective in terms of cost and simplicity of the architecture:

• Access layer i.e LANs uses 100Base T Ethernet switches
• Distribution layer uses switched backbone
• Core layer uses routed backbone
• VLAN is also a popular choice now a days but it adds to the cost and complications in the system
