It is the standard generic term for satellite navigation systems ("sat nav") which give autonomous geo-spatial positioning along with global coverage. GNSS let small electronic receivers to find out their location (latitude, longitude and altitude) to within a few metres by using time signals transmitted along a line-of-sight by radio from satellites. Receivers compute the precise time as well as position, which can be employed as a reference for scientific experiments.
