BIOS short for Basic Input/output System, the BIOS, ROM BIOS, or System BIOS is a chip situated on all motherboards which consists of the instructions and setup for booting the system and how it will operates.
The four main functions of a PC BIOS are as follows:
a) POST - It tests the computer hardware and assures that no errors exist before loading operating system. More information on POST can be easily found on the POST and Beep Codes page.
b) Bootstrap Loader - It locates the operating system. In case, a capable operating system is situated, the BIOS will pass control to it.
c) BIOS drivers - Low level drivers which will provide the computer basic operational control over the computer's hardware.
d) BIOS or CMOS Setup - Configuration program which enables you to configure hardware settings incorporating the system settings like time, computer passwords, and date.
