Once an adaptor has noticed the collision and stopped transmitting the data, it waits for the particular amount of time and tries again. Each time it tries to send however fails, the adaptor increases the amount of time it waits before trying again. This method of doubling the delay interval between each of the transmission attempt is a general technique termed as exponential back off.
