Steel is the alloy of carbon and iron, consisting of iron phase as well as iron carbides. Crude steel produced from iron holds an undesirable amount of oxygen and sulphur. Manganese performs a key role because of two significant properties: its capability to combine with sulphur and its prevailing deoxidation capability. If there is inadequate manganese, the sulphur closes with iron to form a low melting point sulphide that melts at hot rolling temperatures, and as well causing the surface cracking phenomenon that is known as hot shortness. Desulphurization procedures lessen require for manganese in this respect. Some thirty of the manganese employed today is still employed for its properties as a sulphide former and deoxidant.
The other seventy of the manganese is employed purely as an alloying element. These alloying uses are only depending on the desired properties of steel being made. Steel, as has been noted, holds iron and carbon. At room temperature, iron crystallizes in the body-centered cubic structure named alpha iron (or ferrite). At a high temperature (or above 910 degrees C), the structure is transformed in the face-centered cubic form, which is named as gamma iron (or austenite). If the steel is cooled down gradually, the carbon, soluble in austenite, precipitates as iron carbide is named as cementite, the austenite transforms to ferrite and they impetuous together in a feature lamellar structure recognized as pearlite.
