Why is it important to develop the skill of questioning? How does developing this skill apply to your reading of empirical articles, research conclusions, and your own dissertation?
In the article by Paul and Elder, "The Critical Mind is a Questioning Mind" (1996) from the Foundation for Critical Thinking, there is a description of the elements of critical thinking. The authors delineate the questions as the strategic plan, so to speak, of the thinking process. The questions begin to focus our attention in one direction or another, sometimes leading us in a path of clearer understanding, and other times leading us to a frustrating impasse. It steers our investigation and may broaden or narrow our view.
