Plastic moment capacity

Question 1:

a) Define shape factor, factor of safety and load factor.
b) Find out the shape factors for rectangular and circular sections and Comment on them.
c) Differentiate plastic hinge and mechanical hinge.

Question 4: A fixed beam of span 8m carries a uniformly distributed load of 80KN/m over the entire span. If the load factor is 2.0, determine the Plastic moment Mp. If the shape factor for the cross-section of the beam is 1.15 and the yield stress is 250 N/mm2, calculate the sectional modulus of the beam.

Question 5: A rectangular portal frame ABCD consists of the beam BC of span 4.5m and columns of height 3m. The columns are hinged at base. The frame carries a vertical point load of 160kN at the centre of span BC and a horizontal load of 40kN applied horizontally at B. Taking the load factor as 1.75 determine collapse moment. State how the frame will collapse.

Question 6: The figure below shows a rectangular portal frame whose legs are fixed at the base. Find the value of W at which the frame will collapse. All the members are of the same section.
