Chloroplasts are organelles which is present in the cytoplasm of the plant and algae cells. Like mitochondria, chloroplasts enfold two boundary membranes and numerous internal membranous sacs. Within the organelle there are DNA, RNA and ribosome and also the pigment chlorophyll, responsible for absorption of photic energy that is used in photosynthesis.
The major function of chloroplasts is photosynthesis: the production of hugely energetic organic molecules (glucose) from carbon dioxide, light and water.
